Health Insurance for Musicians

Of all the states in USA, Austin is among some of the top earners in the music sector. An estimate says that it creates a total of 11,200 jobs annually. In order to further enrich the sector a special low cost health insurance for musicians has been launched in Austin. This is another move to honor and help the musicians of Austin which work hard to make sure that Austin is and remains the "live music capital of the world".

According to Ray Benson who performs with the Asleep at the Wheel, a band based in Austin, musicians are simply unable to afford health insurance. Incidentally Benson is also a member of the board of Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM). HAAM serves a number of musicians in Austin and its musician health insurance plans cover primary care, dental coverage as well as mental health counseling.

The primary health care in this musician insurance is provided by Seton Health-care Network. Dental care is offered by St David's Foundation. Musicians get the mental health services from SIMS Foundation. All the three partners aim to keep the musicians based in Austin healthy and ready to perform . Seton Musicians Clinic has deployed renowned expert Carolyn Schwarz from their ranks to handle the eligibility requirements.

Schwarz informs that Seton aims to serve around 500 musicians based in Austin. The musician's health insurance is available to eligible musicians only. Schwarz informs us that these musicians play a key role in both their economy and in their culture. In case they are put out of commission due to health issues, both the culture and the economy end up suffering. She further informs that being an unorganized class they are struggling to meet their health care needs.

St. David's Foundation is a well known name in dental care in Austin, in the State of Texas and in a number of other areas in United States. It is also playing its own part in this move by providing facilities of dental care to musicians.

The foundation has deployed a mobile dental van for this purpose. The van is stationed outside the Ruta Maya Coffee Shop. It shall provide free dental care to musicians based in Austin. The foundation has a lot of experience in handling dental care out of it premises. Ever since 1999, St. David's Foundation has been deploying three dental care vans. These vans are meant to provide dental care to indigent school children.

The musicians health insurance is available to those musicians who are working and are uninsured. They need to be making either a minimum of $5000 annually or amount that is less than 250 percent of the figure defined as the Federal Poverty Level. Applications for this health insurance for musicians are available from three locations Ruta Maya Coffee Shop, Waterloo Records and Musicmakers.
