HPM Bootcamp Begins 2007 in Bethesda with MidAtlantic Business Group on Health as Host

Denver, Colo. (PRWeb) December 7, 2006 -- The MidAtlantic Business Group on Health (MABGH) will host 2007’s first HPM Bootcamp — a nationwide series of three-day, intensive training sessions geared toward corporate leaders in search of a hands-on approach to implementing health and productivity management (HPM) strategies. HPM Bootcamp will be held Feb. 20-22, 2007 at the Bethesda Marriott in Bethesda, Md.

John Miller, executive director of the MABGH in Greenbelt, Md., and an HPM Bootcamp faculty member, says one of the difficulties employers face is “finding ways to quantify and put into practice the theoretical discussions about what productivity is and how it relates to return on investment.”

Indeed, an article in the December 2006 issue of Benefits & Compensation Digest estimating the total cost of poor employee health suggests that absence and productivity loss can reach as high as 60% to 80% of total health costs in an employee population of 10,000, depending on salaries, compared to 40% for medical expenses.

One MABGH member that recognizes the value of HPM to mitigate rising health care costs over the long haul is the Constellation Energy in Baltimore, Md.

“We believe that a well-designed and implemented health and productivity management program will play a significant role in our ability to control costs and improve productivity while also allowing us to continue offering competitive and affordable benefits and programs that will contribute to the achievement of our business strategies,” notes Marc Ugol, the company’s senior vice president of human resources.

One of the learning outcomes Miller hopes HPM Bootcamp attendees will leave with is an ability to identify sources that will enable them to quantify productivity improvements based on their actions involving a number of health-related issues. Others include a better understanding of health-improvement activities that can be implemented and ongoing support that will enable them to connect with peers and faculty members in hopes of reducing medical claims, improving employee health and increasing productivity.

“As a purchaser’s coalition,” Miller says, “we are very interested in the concept of value-based purchasing, which means we encourage our members not to make purchasing decisions on the basis of cost alone.”

The larger idea is to give equal consideration to quality-of-care issues. Potential returns on investment are easily retrievable through medical and pharmaceutical claims data. The trick is tracking any returns related to absenteeism, disability and productivity, which is where he says HPM programs come into play as an invaluable cost-management tool.

Featuring 18 on-site, university-style learning events with an evidence-based and outcomes-driven focus with insights from national experts, HPM Bootcamp will be sponsored by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Healthways, Inc. and The Fort Hill Company.

“The aim is to deliver 30,000-foot-level theory down to the street for a higher return on investment,” says Les C. Meyer, a seasoned health care strategist and CEO of HPM Advisors, Inc., a Denver, Colo.-based think tank and creator of HPM Bootcamp.

Bruce W. Sherman, M.D., an HPM Bootcamp faculty member and director of health and productivity initiatives for the Employers Health Coalition of Ohio, says managing employee health and productivity requires a certain level of expertise and skill set that’s rapidly evolving.

“Here’s an opportunity to learn from people who are at the cutting edge in this area how to understand and apply these principles to their own organization,” says Sherman, who’s also assistant clinical professor in the division of pulmonary and clinical care medicine at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. “Health care costs are such a large portion of everyone’s operating budget that it isn’t an area where there’s much room for trial and error. HPM Bootcamp offers practical tools to anyone who’s involved in the design and implementation of a health management strategy.”

HPM Bootcamp attendees, who are able to earn continuing education units and medical education credits, will be instructed on immediately actionable steps to improve health and productivity and strive for better work-life balance in hopes of attracting and retaining a high-performance workforce, and boosting profitability. They also will learn how to build a business case and operating plan, plus harness robust administration processes and company-wide performance measurement systems.
